Mermaid Cat Tarot is a whimsical and endearing deck that depicts the fantasy sea world of mermaid cats, based on the traditional Rider-Waite deck.
All the images in the Mermaid Cat Tarot are my original illustrations. However, the design of each card is influenced by the classic Rider-Waite deck, which is recommended by many master tarot readers. This means that the Mermaid Cat Tarot is great for beginners, because any book referencing the Rider-Waite books should also work with this deck. Unlike the Rider-Waite deck and many other decks, the Mermaid Cat Tarot doesn't contain any nudity, blood or spooky elements, so it’s appropriate for kids as well as adults. In the world of Mermaid Cats, the characters and elements on the cards are represented as sea creatures and plants. For example, pentacles are sand dollars, horses are seahorses, and wands are made of coral. The background of the images is an old paper texture that adds a bit of vintage flavor.

Creation
I initially created this deck for myself, because I couldn't find one that spoke to me. Since the right deck for me wasn’t on the market, I decided I’d have to create it for myself! Why mermaid cats? I've been doodling these imaginary creatures for a few years, because I love and live with cats and tropical fishes. I realized that I had been developing my own visual language for oracular interpretation.
My image creation process was half old school and half hi-tech. I drew the images with a pen on paper, scanned them, and digitally colored and composed the cards. It would have been much faster to do the whole process digitally, but I love to play with real pens and real paper. Also, the months I spent drawing the decks by hand forced me to slow down and spend time with each card.
After I completed all 78 of my cards, I printed a copy for myself and made a few tote bags, to carry my shopping in. And then a funny thing happened. People started stopping me on the street and asking about the designs on my bags. Friends asked me to let them print t-shirts of some of the designs. And everyone who saw my deck kept asking me: How can I buy a copy? Where’s the Kickstarter for this? Now I can finally tell them: Here it is!
